Hot Dog Eating Day

What is known in one part of the world as Independence Day, and in many parts of the world as the 4^th of July, is known in ALL of the world as the International Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest Day! The US title of 37 hot dogs is currently held by a woman, and last year's winner, Takeru Kobayashi, of reflux fame, retained his title and the "Coveted Mustard Yellow International Belt" with 49 in 12 minutes, though he did not beat his record from last year of 53.5. Someone tell me how they count halves.
